London… I did what most Singaporeans love to do when they travel… food & shopping! :) Of course, I did visit the London Eye, Big Ben, British Museum and Tower of London. These famous spots are already so well-known, there’s no need for me to elaborate – they look exactly like how they do in postcards! Let’s delve deeper into what I found in the heart of London!
London Food
We decided to try as many Michelin Star restaurants as we could during our short stay. So we went on a foodie spree to Dinner by Hestons, Chiltern Firehouse and Pollen Street Social.
Please read the captions to know what the pictures say!

caramelized pineapples roasting on their spits…

hestons’ signature starter: meat fruit… mandarin, chicken liver parfait, grilled bread.
Looks nice, but not quite palatable to my taste. Mushy chicken liver inside. Hubby asked: “So where do they put the orange after taking it out?” LOL. :D

starter: salamagundy… chicken oysters, marrow bone, horseradish cream… who’d think of it??
This one was great! If you ate the chicken oyster or marrow bone separately, it didn’t taste like much on its own. Take a bite of both together and it tasted so smooth, as if it melted inside your mouth, with mmmmmmmm…

A very special dessert dish indeed. The caramelized pineapple is very nice, but I had way too much bread.
Coming up next… Lunch at Dinner by Hestons was good, but my personal favorite was Chiltern Firehouse.

We had a bar top seating, so we could look right into the kitchen and watch the kitchen hands prepare our food right in front of us! There he is, working on our starter (steak tartare) and special (jumbo prawns).

This wasn’t too appetizing for me. Somehow I can’t take to mushy meat. But the Firehouse hot sauce was very yummy.

Huge jumbo prawns, very fresh too. They change their specials every week.

This is the best dish ever!!! It doesn’t look like much, but it is super duper yummy! I didn’t want to order it at first, but they prepared so many of these while we looked on, that we decided that we had to try it. The grilled octopus and mushrooms went well together, and the hint of chilli made it unforgettable. I missed this the most, now that I’ve left London.

Does this look like beef to you??
It’s actually Iberico pork! (Similar to the roast pork chop during lunch at Dinner by Hestons.) It’s cooked to medium rare and actually tastes exactly like beef! I’m truly a noob at food.

Fish steak. Redefines the meaning of fish steak – thick, juicy, succulent.
We were so happy with Chiltern Firehouse, we decided to stay for dessert. A simple one as recommended by our waiter, called Milk & Honey. It was made of fresh milk ice cream topped with honeycomb and honey. So simple! Yet so fresh, and concluded our meal with such sweetness. :D :D :D
On the last day of our stay in London, we dined at Pollen Street Social.
![starters: mushroom tea, olive biscuits, madelines]()

I didn’t know you could make tea out of mushrooms, served out of a little glass teapot. It was super duper fragrant!

The fish broth in this starter dish is super fragrant. It’s sweet, absolutely seafoody and goes very well with the chewy diced squid. :)
![pollen street social]()
starter: clarence court slow cooked egg, scottish morels, wye valley asparagus, chicken crumb & wild garlic
![main dish: cumbrian suckling pig, roasted apple, king cabbage, granola clusters]()

Hubby ordered the signature suckling pig but you can forget about trying this… You can get better roast pork in Crystal Jade or Imperial Treasure in Singapore. It vaguely reminded me of canned food. Was rather disappointed with it. I ordered a South coast John Dory with English crayfish, asparagus, roasted artichokes and shellfish broth. The shellfish broth was fantastic, like the broth in the squid starter dish, but the fish was very normal… just a bit better than Fish & Co. Another disappointment! Didn’t bother posting its pic. Haha. :P
Pollen Street Social was my least favorite. The waitress’ face was black and service was only so-so. We took their top recommendations for food and were mildly impressed. Hubby and I suspect they might lose that Michelin Star soon…? Perhaps our taste buds were spoilt by Chiltern Firehouse’s ingenious dishes just a few days before. :P
Ok, this isn’t a Michelin Star, but guess who we stumbled on just across the road from our hotel at Angel Square?

What a feast! The prawn linguine with chilli (placed at bottom left of this pic) was yummy! Did you know that Jamie Oliver has a restaurant at Vivocity named Jamie’s Italian, with a very similar menu too? They have this prawn linguine on their Singapore menu too. I must visit to reminisce again some time soon.
London Shopping
![Harrods]()
What a grand building Harrods is! Cab driver told me that a lot of Arabs shop here. I didn’t find much to shop in here, except some souvenirs for home from the famous Food Hall at basement.

I also shopped at Regent Street and Selfridge & Co. Bought a pair of limited edition monochrome red Christian Louboutin shoes for SGD 780. I hope to wear them at the opening of our new Tiffiny Yang Aesthetics in August this year. :)

Wish I could wear hats like this everyday. The Duchess of Cambridge is so lucky. :D
My favorite shopping was (unbelievably) at Hamleys Toy Shop, established since 1760 – gosh, our country isn’t even that old. Enjoyed buying toys and books for our 2 little boys back home. Hubby and I were both very intrigued by the innovative toys they created for little children! They sold a lot of magic tricks just like those you see on TV, toy planes you throw and fly right back to you and many others that they were demonstrating live to shoppers at Hamleys.
Did you know that Hamleys is opening a new outlet at Plaza Singapura?? Oh my, the world is coming to Singapore and Asia indeed.
