oops, I did it again…

You’re never too young to start staying young, so I had to get back to my regular laser facial and repeat my PRP (platelet rich plasma) face rejuvenation treatment, once I was out of confinement. Who knows, there may still be some hormones of pregnancy and possibly stem cells that are still circulating in my blood, which can give an extra boost to my skin’s rejuvenation. ;)

Not to mention, I saw the beginnings of some tiny crow’s feet– to my utmost horror! Not what a little botox cannot solve though. Whew. :D

Thank you, Minami さん, for helping me work towards being forever young. :D

1 week after the faithful treatments…

See, right little eyebag gone.

And there’s this after glow that lasts for about 3 months. All without surgery or massive downtime. No, not even a teensy weensy bruise or red mark. I simply love the minimally invasive aesthetics! :D

Many people have a misconception of what cheek filler augmentation can do for them. They think that filling up the cheeks make the cheekbones wider or make them look fatter, which is absolutely not true!

With the process of aging, especially in slim Asian / Oriental women, the first part of the face to lose the volume of youth is often on the cheeks, particularly medially (i.e. the part of cheeks right next to the nose bridge). You don’t notice it at first, but when the skin starts to droop due to disappearance of the apples of the cheeks, jowling starts and laugh lines form — that’s when it becomes noticeable that age is catching up with you.

radiesse brochure

“In a young face, the widest part is at the cheeks but as we age, the cheeks deflate and excess skin falls toward the jawline. . . That makes the triangle flip upside down so that the widest part of the face is now at the jawline.” says dermatologist Dr Marina I Peredo, of the Spatique Medical Spa, New York.

So what shall we do to save face?

A simple cheek filler augmentation procedure is usually good enough to fight off the initial signs of such aging. 1-2cc of a suitable volumising filler is typically sufficient in a younger person. If you have waited too long, you may need up to 3 or 4cc of similar filler to make a good correction. Small measures done early prevent the need for more radical corrective surgery later on, which probably carries greater risk and downtime. I’ll recommend Radiesse or Juvederm Voluma for this purpose.

So seek out your friendly aesthetics doctor today for reshaping and restoring your cheeks, to fight off the signs of age! :)

Thermage is for face slimming too!

Pregnancy made my skin sag!! Esp after losing all that weight (20kg of baby, water and fat, no joke!)… I had to do something about it… so I used my own Thermage 2 weeks ago~ :D

tiffiny yangI surprised myself – my face looked slimmer in the next few days… :) My hubby commented I look prettier. (Yippee!)

Analysis of the day:

When the skin sags, it droops down by gravity and makes the face look boxier or bottom heavy. That’s how skin tightening can help to slim the face – by restoring the skin back to its original place. :D

Will wait for further improvement in the next 1-2 months too! ;)

I think I should take a dose of albendazole after this binge of sashimi. There was also other seafood, local delights +++, pasta, desserts and (of course) chocolate fondue. Great place to go for a business lunch meeting, esp if you are a Starwood Preferred Guest cos you get 25% discount. ;)

american academy of aesthetic medicine ~ diploma

Just underwent a post-graduate diploma course held by the American Academy of Aesthetic Medicine.

It was a grueling course, expounding deeply into the various aspects of aesthetic medicine, such as botox, fillers, lasers, pigmentation, acne scars, stretch marks, cellulite, hair regrowth, etc. Geez, I was tired at the end of it, but I gained so much new insights thereafter! It’s amazing what new perspectives you can obtain when you go through apparently old stuff that you think you already know. As the Chinese saying goes, 温故知新 and 三人行,必有我师。No matter how experienced one is, there is always something new to learn or refresh your knowledge in. :) (Plus, doctors love to get together and share practices. XD)

tiffiny yang at aaam

I even tried some treatments on myself, such as sclerotherapy for the blue veins I inherited from housemanship and mesotherapy for the bit of hair I lost after pregnancy. :( I must say it’s only day 3 of treatment and my veins already look 90% better. I’ll keep an eye on the hair regrowth and update this space later, since they may take a while to work.

The best thing about it was the people I met there, such as the president of AAAM Dr Michel Delune, Dr Marcelo Suarez from Chicago, a very sweet lady dr whom I also met at a previous AAAM course and many others. :)

dr tiffiny yang with Dr Michel Delune

As a side note, I find my marionette lines shorter in this pic, after my recent Thermage treatment! See here. I didn’t even set the Thermage treatment very high, for fear of the pain since I did it without numbing cream. I think the trick is to repeat the passes many times to obtain better results at lower settings – only thing is that it takes a longer time for the doctor to perform it. Also, if you start early, it works better as the skin is still very much able to respond in new collagen production and tightening.

dr tiffiny yang with Dr Amelie Seghers

And at the end of it, a beautiful certificate as proof of my continual efforts to upkeep and improve my knowledge, for betterment of all my patients! :) It’s important to keep abreast of the latest developments in this fast-changing field of aesthetic medicine, so that I can always recommend the most suitable treatments to help my patients look awesome and regain confidence.

FDA approves fat injection for double chin!

Breaking news – another advancement in medical aesthetics! This year, FDA approved an ingredient known as deoxycholate for dissolving fat.

Read it here.

Just a few injections to take away fat. If it’s approved for other body areas, it may very well put liposuction out into the sidelines, save for the rising trend in fat grafting. :D Dissolving fat by external freezing will become a thing of the past.

Here’s keeping you up to date with the latest trends in medical aesthetics!

Thermage, highly recommended by Gwyneth Paltrow!

We quote:

“(Last) year, 41-year-old Gwyneth Paltrow let slip a little beauty secret. Her famously flawless complexion is not just the result of good genes and an organic diet but has been given a helping hand by a cosmetic procedure called Thermage.

Dubbed ‘the ironing treatment’, Gwynnie says the procedure has taken years off her face and suits her much better than rival wrinkle-busting treatment Botox which the actress claims made her look ‘crazy, like Joan Rivers’.

Designed to tighten and smooth skin by promoting collagen production in its lower layers, Thermage smooths out wrinkles, tightens saggy jowls and reduces hooding around the eyes. Furthermore the treatment has no down time. Fans say it is the ultimate lunchtime beauty fix.”

Gwyneth Paltrow after Thermage

She sure look like she hasn’t aged for two decades… :D

Some people feel that Thermage does not seem to give enough of a drastic difference. Truth is, it isn’t a facelifting surgery. However, it is highly suitable for people who want to start fighting the early signs of aging, especially from their 30s when the earliest skin sagging and subtlest wrinkles start to show. This “ironing treatment” easily smoothens out these problems at an early stage and maintains your skin in a flawless state before things turn too late. By the time jowling or deeper lines form, it’s too late – most treatments then don’t quite reverse these completely, or otherwise look a tad unnatural, even if they can give a “drastic difference”.

Prevention is surely better than cure. :)

Why you’ll be getting cosmetic procedures even if you may not really want to.

$
0
0

Times Weekly published a sterling article last week on why we should get a nip & tuck, even if we don’t think we need to. And here’s why:

“You’re going to have to do it. And not all that long from now. Probably not a full-on, general-anesthesia bone shaving or muscle slicing. But almost definitely some injections into your face. Very likely a session of fat melting in some areas and then possibly moving it to some other parts that could use plumping. Not because you hate yourself, fear aging or are vain. You’re going to get a cosmetic procedure for the same reason you wear makeup: because every other woman is.

No, it’s not fair that–in 2015, with a woman leading the race for the Democratic nomination for President–in addition to dieting, coloring your hair, applying makeup and working out, you now have to let some doctor push syringes in your cheeks just to look presentable. It’s not fair that you have to put your surgery on your credit card just so the other moms on the playground don’t overestimate your age. It’s not fair that you may risk your life going under general anesthesia just to keep up.

Then again, maybe it’s not fair that some women are born straight-nosed and full-breasted. That some people don’t have trouble staying thin. That workers with above-average looks will make $230,000 more over their lifetime than people who are in the aesthetic bottom seventh, as a study by University of Texas economics professor Daniel Hamermesh found. Maybe it doesn’t feel fair that a man is writing about this, even if more and more males are starting to feel the same kind of pressure that women have dealt with for decades.

Having work done lost nearly all of its shame years ago. A few months before she died, Joan Rivers told me about a dinner party she went to in 1973, not long after her first face-lift. Always eager to be an entertaining guest, Rivers shared her experience with Janet Leigh and the other actors gathered at Roddy McDowall’s Los Angeles home. “They asked, ‘What’s it like?’” she recalled. “They had such scars running up the back of their heads. It was like the B&O Railroad. ‘What’s it like?’ I wanted to say, ‘You don’t remember?’”

For nearly five decades after, Rivers was ridiculed as vain and tacky for her cosmetic surgeries. But about six years ago, people stopped mocking and started asking Rivers for advice. She wrote a book to answer them, Men Are Stupid … And They Like Big Boobs: A Woman’s Guide to Beauty Through Plastic Surgery. Women, she found, had become as open about their Botox, fillers and mommy makeovers as she had always been. Not having work done is now the new shame.

This shift happened partly because doctors got more nuanced and stopped making patients look like tigers with bolt-on breasts. Partly because so many procedures don’t involve surgery at all. Partly because procedures got a bit cheaper and doctors created payment plans. Partly because reality shows demystified the process… Partly because, due to social media and phone cameras, everyone is always on the red carpet. And partly because our culture has become so much more narcissistic that we now regularly celebrate doing something for ourselves as if it’s a moral imperative…

But it’s the cheaper, nonsurgical procedures that have become commonplace. U.S. doctors perform more than five times as many nonsurgical procedures as surgeries, delivering 3.6 million rounds of Botox (and other non-name-brand injectable neuromodulators), along with 1.7 million shots of Juvederm, Restylane and similar fillers…

Celebrity magazines and websites commend “good work” with the neofeminist language of taking care of yourself–it’s upkeep like yoga, cold-pressed juices and mani-pedis. But a face that’s a bit too tight, boobs a bit too big, lips a bit too plump–“bad work”–and you’re cast as sad, vain, phony…

Acceptability eventually comes to nearly all forms of vanity. In 19th century America, makeup was often sold under the counter because it was considered a tool of prostitution. In the 1930s, when hair dyeing was new, women got their color done in the basements of beauty parlors so no one would see them and continued to do so for decades after; now 75% of women dye their hair. And 15 years ago, getting your teeth whitened made you a tool; now dentists throw in free whitener in the goodie bag along with the floss and a toothbrush. It’s actually difficult to find a toothpaste that doesn’t include whitening.

Since Botox was introduced as a cosmetic product in 2002, most of the advances have come in dermatology–many from Harvard University’s professor of dermatology R. Rox Anderson, who helped invent and refine ways to use lasers to remove hair, tattoos and wrinkles, as well as the hugely popular CoolSculpting, which painlessly freezes body fat from a machine placed on the skin, causing the fat to disintegrate and come out with your urine. Dermatologists also use fillers, which replace the skin’s hyaluronic acid (instead of its collagen, the old method), to replace lost volume. In November 2013, Juvederm introduced Voluma, a filler for cheeks that can last two years, provides more lift and has a reversible antidote in case a patient changes her mind or a doctor goes too far…

These kinds of procedures are even starting to get normalized for guys. More than three times as many men are getting “Brotox” than in 2000.”

Kudos for an article well-written and aptly put. Why feel ashamed of doing something good for ourselves, to better ourselves?? Is it too vain to get your hair nicely styled at the hairdressing salon? Is it superficial to polish your nails prettily? Indeed it was considered vain… at about a century ago. Nowadays? Nope. There’s no reason to be shy about it at all. It’s now the new norm. ;)

London thru Tiffy’s eyes…

London… I did what most Singaporeans love to do when they travel… food & shopping! :) Of course, I did visit the London Eye, Big Ben, British Museum and Tower of London. These famous spots are already so well-known, there’s no need for me to elaborate – they look exactly like how they do in postcards! Let’s delve deeper into what I found in the heart of London!

London Food

We decided to try as many Michelin Star restaurants as we could during our short stay. So we went on a foodie spree to Dinner by Hestons, Chiltern Firehouse and Pollen Street Social.

Please read the captions to know what the pictures say!

dinner by hestons

hestons' signature: caramelized pineapples roasting on their spits...

caramelized pineapples roasting on their spits…

hestons’ signature starter: meat fruit… mandarin, chicken liver parfait, grilled bread.

Looks nice, but not quite palatable to my taste. Mushy chicken liver inside. Hubby asked: “So where do they put the orange after taking it out?” LOL. :D

starter: salamagundy… chicken oysters, marrow bone, horseradish cream… who’d think of it??

This one was great! If you ate the chicken oyster or marrow bone separately, it didn’t taste like much on its own. Take a bite of both together and it tasted so smooth, as if it melted inside your mouth, with mmmmmmmm

A very special dessert dish indeed. The caramelized pineapple is very nice, but I had way too much bread.

Coming up next… Lunch at Dinner by Hestons was good, but my personal favorite was Chiltern Firehouse.

chiltern firehouse

We had a bar top seating, so we could look right into the kitchen and watch the kitchen hands prepare our food right in front of us! There he is, working on our starter (steak tartare) and special (jumbo prawns).

starter: steak tartare, pine nuts, chipotle, firehouse hot sauce

starter: steak tartare, pine nuts, chipotle, firehouse hot sauce

This wasn’t too appetizing for me. Somehow I can’t take to mushy meat. But the Firehouse hot sauce was very yummy.

special: prawns a la plancha, red pepper, parsley

special: prawns a la plancha, red pepper, parsley

Huge jumbo prawns, very fresh too. They change their specials every week.

starter: grilled galician octopus, auberigine, daikon, mushrooms

starter: grilled galician octopus, auberigine, daikon, mushrooms

This is the best dish ever!!! It doesn’t look like much, but it is super duper yummy! I didn’t want to order it at first, but they prepared so many of these while we looked on, that we decided that we had to try it. The grilled octopus and mushrooms went well together, and the hint of chilli made it unforgettable. I missed this the most, now that I’ve left London.

main dish: chargrilled iberico pork, seared courgettes, swiss chard pickle

main dish: chargrilled iberico pork, seared courgettes, swiss chard pickle

Does this look like beef to you??

It’s actually Iberico pork! (Similar to the roast pork chop during lunch at Dinner by Hestons.) It’s cooked to medium rare and actually tastes exactly like beef! I’m truly a noob at food.

main dish: monkfish cooked over pine, puffed barley, fennel

main dish: monkfish cooked over pine, puffed barley, fennel

Fish steak. Redefines the meaning of fish steak – thick, juicy, succulent.

We were so happy with Chiltern Firehouse, we decided to stay for dessert. A simple one as recommended by our waiter, called Milk & Honey. It was made of fresh milk ice cream topped with honeycomb and honey. So simple! Yet so fresh, and concluded our meal with such sweetness. :D :D :D

On the last day of our stay in London, we dined at Pollen Street Social.

starters: mushroom tea, olive biscuits, madelines

starters: mushroom tea, olive biscuits, madelines

I didn’t know you could make tea out of mushrooms, served out of a little glass teapot. It was super duper fragrant!

starter: line caught devon squid cooked in cauliflower, roasted squid juices, ink rice & sea herbs

starter: line caught devon squid cooked in cauliflower, roasted squid juices, ink rice & sea herbs

The fish broth in this starter dish is super fragrant. It’s sweet, absolutely seafoody and goes very well with the chewy diced squid. :)

pollen street social

starter: clarence court slow cooked egg, scottish morels, wye valley asparagus, chicken crumb & wild garlic

main dish: cumbrian suckling pig, roasted apple, king cabbage, granola clusters

main dish: cumbrian suckling pig, roasted apple, king cabbage, granola clusters

Hubby ordered the signature suckling pig but you can forget about trying this… You can get better roast pork in Crystal Jade or Imperial Treasure in Singapore. It vaguely reminded me of canned food. Was rather disappointed with it. I ordered a South coast John Dory with English crayfish, asparagus, roasted artichokes and shellfish broth. The shellfish broth was fantastic, like the broth in the squid starter dish, but the fish was very normal… just a bit better than Fish & Co. Another disappointment! Didn’t bother posting its pic. Haha. :P

Pollen Street Social was my least favorite. The waitress’ face was black and service was only so-so. We took their top recommendations for food and were mildly impressed. Hubby and I suspect they might lose that Michelin Star soon…? Perhaps our taste buds were spoilt by Chiltern Firehouse’s ingenious dishes just a few days before. :P

Ok, this isn’t a Michelin Star, but guess who we stumbled on just across the road from our hotel at Angel Square?

Jamie Oliver

Jamie Oliver

What a feast! The prawn linguine with chilli (placed at bottom left of this pic) was yummy! Did you know that Jamie Oliver has a restaurant at Vivocity named Jamie’s Italian, with a very similar menu too? They have this prawn linguine on their Singapore menu too. I must visit to reminisce again some time soon.

My favorite shopping was (unbelievably) at Hamleys Toy Shop, established since 1760 – gosh, our country isn’t even that old. Enjoyed buying toys and books for our 2 little boys back home. Hubby and I were both very intrigued by the innovative toys they created for little children! They sold a lot of magic tricks just like those you see on TV, toy planes you throw and fly right back to you and many others that they were demonstrating live to shoppers at Hamleys.

Did you know that Hamleys is opening a new outlet at Plaza Singapura?? Oh my, the world is coming to Singapore and Asia indeed.

We had this dish a year ago when we first dined at T’ang Court and it was so delectable I felt I didn’t have enough of it then. It was already off the menu by the time we revisited and we had to make a special order for it. Didn’t lose its lustre at all and didn’t disappoint. :)

the famous Kim Kardashian’s Vampire Facelift

$
0
0

In the August 31, 2015 issue of Times magazine, Susanna Schrobsdorff writes in response to the seeming “ageless beauty” of Hollywood celebrities:

“The goal now is to ward off aging while you are still young, using all the magical nonsurgical options medicine has to offer, like preventive Botox that starts in your 20s, or micro needling,… Or how about the process whereby your own plasma is injected into your face, the ‘vampire facial’. Celebrities like Kim Kardashian, who is just 34, are already talking openly about using some of these techniques. Kardashian even went on camera while getting a vampire facial… Eventually, these procedures will become less expensive, and ordinary people my daughter’s age will have these options and the dilemmas that go with them. Already anti-aging is starting to be considered maintenance, like coloring your hair. And it’s partly a survival tactic. In an era when 20-something start billion dollar companies, youth is prized and looking older can have an economic cost.”

Frankly, I couldn’t have put it better.

In this day and age where people are constantly seeking out anti-aging treatments, what is truly an anti-aging treatment today? For the longest time, platelet-rich plasma has been used widely to regenerate tissue in sports medicine and orthopedics, but recently has also become popular in cosmetic medicine, made famous by Kim Kardashian in the Vampire Facelift. This treatment does actually reverse skin aging where it is applied and is certainly promising as the next big thing of the future.

The Vampire Facelift uses a small amount of your blood (approximately 8cc), which is centrifuged and the platelet rich portion of the plasma is drawn out and reapplied to your face. It can help to add volume to your face in areas that have hollowed out, or improve the color and texture of your skin. This procedure takes only 1 hour to complete and there is a little downtime of needle marks and bruising for a few days.

kim kardashian vampire facelift

There are other medical beauty and rejuvenating applications for the “vampire” concept, using the amazing healing properties of your blood. Vampire Breast Lift can be used to enhance the contours of your breasts. Even though it cannot increase breast volume by any cup size, it can help to reshape breasts that need only minor tweaking to look supple again, and even restore nipple sensation and appearance. There is also a demand for sexual rejuvenation by injecting “vampire” to the G spot and clitoris. ;)

hide yamamoto teppanyakiJon booked a dinner at Hide Yamamoto for my birthday celebration last week. Until now, all I knew of teppanyaki was the Singaporean kind you see in food courts, with bean sprouts and black pepper sauce, so one can imagine how new this experience will be to me. :D

Did a special hairdo that night!

The place was posh and right above the casino at MBS. We got a private seating too.

chawanmushi

chawanmushi with white truffle oil

After too many Sakae chawanmushis, this one takes the cake for being the softest egg custard ever! With a hint of white truffle oil. :)

abalone and foie gras

Seafood will never be the same again. I’ve never had a abalone steak before.

wagyu beef

teppanyaki wagyu beef that was as tender as tofu; melted in your mouth!

This wagyu beef was so tender, it was like tofu in your mouth! :P I didn’t see that many antics by the chef, but he set this steak on fire on the pan. Hur hur. :D

birthday dessert!

chocolate ice cream with espresso, crystallised cashews and almonds

The dessert menu was limited but this looked like a very good choice. They added the candle for my birthday celebration.

Overall, a very enjoyable gastronomical experience. What’s most important was I had my darling hubby dining with me! Thank you, hubby, for all of this! :)

it was love at first sight…
